A social network service is social software specifically focused on the building and verifying of social networks for whatever purpose. As of 2005, there are over three hundred known social networking web sites.
SNSとは、ソフトウェアのことで、特に人間関係を築き、それを担保する仕組み、目的は様々だ。2005年では、300を越えるこの種のサイトがある。

　　

MySpace is a free social networking internet service which enables its registered members to communicate through blogs, an internal e-mail system, web forums and more. Members can also upload and display photos and other information on their profile.
MySpaceは、無料のオンラインSNSで、会員にはブログによる交流や、メール、ウェブフォーラムなども。会員は、写真その他の情報などもプロフィール上で自由に更新できる。

MySpace was founded in 2003 as a web portal for musicians. Artists were provided a means of sharing music as well as information on future concert locations. The website's userbase has since grown beyond musicians and as of late-2005 there are over 42 million MySpace users.

Friendster is based on the Circle of Friends technique for networking individuals in virtual communities and demonstrates the small world phenomenon. It was significantly influenced by Ryze, a business networking site founded in 2001, where Friendster's founder was an early member.
Friensterは、「友達の輪」という手法を通し、個人をネットワークしたバーチャルコミュニティ。マイワールドを小さく具現化させたようもの。如実に影響を受けたのは、Ryze。2001年に始まったビジネスネットワーク。Friendsterの創業者も早くから参加していた。

hi5.com is a social networking internet service similar to Friendster and MySpace. ・・Though not as popular in the United States as MySpace or Friendster, hi5 has grown largely popular in Latin American and Caribbean countries.
hi5もオンラインでのSNSで、FriendsterやMySpaceと同じです。ただアメリカではこの二者ほどの人気もなく、大々的な成長を遂げているのは、南米やカリブ海諸国である。

orkut is an Internet social network service run by Google and named after its creator, Google employee,・・a Turkish software engineer developed it as an independent project while working at Google (permitted by its policy)・・73% of orkut's members were from Brazil, followed by 6% from the United States, 5% from Iran and 3% from Pakistan.
orkutはSNSで、あのグーグルが運営、名前はちなみにその産みの親であるグーグルの社員の名前だ、トルコ人エンジニアで、社内の独立プロジェクトとして開発されたもの（同社では認められている）。73％の会員はブラジルで、アメリカは6％、その他イランやパキスタンなど。

しかし、成功は続かなかった。最盛期、ネットワークはアクセスに耐え切れずダウンした。また、ビジネスになるポイントを見出せないままだった。苦戦している間に台頭してきたのが、Myspaceだった。
